AFTER THE PSYCHIATRIC ASSESSMENT – WHAT NOW?

From assessment to the next step

A psychiatric assessment often marks the beginning of a new chapter. For some, the diagnosis is a relief and an explanation for challenges they have experienced for many years. For others, it raises questions, reflection or mixed feelings.

Whatever the outcome, our aim is for you to leave the assessment with greater understanding, clarity and a plan for the next steps.

Review of your diagnosis

We go through the results of the assessment with you and help you understand what the conclusion means for your everyday life.

Written report and recommendations

You receive a written report with concrete recommendations for treatment, support and structure – and any adjustments at work or in education.

Treatment after the assessment

Where relevant, we offer psychotherapy, psychoeducation and medical treatment by a doctor under the supervision of an affiliated psychiatrist – for example as part of ADHD treatment. You receive a thorough written report that can be used in dialogue with your GP or other relevant professionals.

Receiving a diagnosis as an adult

Receiving a diagnosis as an adult – for example ADHD or autism – can have a big impact on how you see yourself, your relationships and your everyday life. It is a process that often involves a mixture of relief, grief and reflection.

The missing piece of the puzzle
The diagnosis can explain the challenges you have experienced throughout your life. Perhaps you have felt wrong, lazy or unable to manage the same things as others. The diagnosis can be a relief, because it gives you professional confirmation that your challenges have had a real cause – it was never about you not wanting to.

A new self-image
The diagnosis can lead to a new understanding of yourself and your story – with both relief and grief over what has been difficult. It is a process. And it is completely normal to need time.

How do I tell others about my diagnosis?

Getting used to the idea of your diagnosis is one thing – telling others about it is another. It can feel difficult to share, because you may fear that people around you will see you differently.

For some, it can be helpful to be open about their diagnosis. However, it is always a personal decision whether you want to share it – and if so, with whom. Openness can create greater understanding, reduce misunderstandings and make it easier to get the support you need. One way to handle the uncertainty can be to hear how others have done it – for example through communities or group programmes.

“The purpose of a psychiatric assessment is not to put a label on you, but to give you and those around you a deeper understanding of your strengths and challenges.

Felix Enghoff Klich, clinical psychologist, co-founder of Nordisk Psykiatri

3 tips from the psychologist

Talk to others about it

Share your thoughts with someone who understands you – friends, a community or a professional. Talking to others and hearing about their experiences can make it easier to accept and share your diagnosis.

Learn about your diagnosis

Use books, podcasts, articles and associations to learn more about your diagnosis and find strategies that suit you.

Remember that it is a process

It is normal to go through a period of confusion and mixed feelings. For many people it takes up less space over time, as they gain a better understanding and find a new balance.
